This paper is the first of a two-part look at insurance linked securities (ILS). In this paper we take an inspective tour through the ILS market, examining how ILS assets differ in their risk and return metrics to traditional asset classes and how they can add value to a traditional investment portfolio. There are various participants in the insurance market and various types of ILS – some tradeable within public markets and others collateralised in private markets.
